Bowling’s best in Bethlehem: Steel City to host PBA Tour Finals

The 2024 Professional Bowlers Association Tour schedule kicks off next week with the Players Championship in Wichita, Kansas.

The pros will be competing not only for prize money; they’ll be adding to their point totals they’ve been accumulating since last year’s Tournament of Champions. When the 2024 TOC is finished in late April, the top eight point-getters will make a trip to our backyard for a one-of-a-kind experience.

Steel City Bowl will roll out the red carpet for the top eight bowlers in the world when they meet at the beautifully remodeled Bethlehem center for the PBA Tour Finals. CBS Sports Network announced the dates for its nine hours of live coverage beginning June 8 and continuing June 9.

“When (PBA commissioner) Tom Clark called me and told me he had good news, that we had been chosen to host the Tour Finals, I think I floated off the floor,’’ said Lee Sandt, co-owner of Steel City with his wife, Krista. “We’re both excited and nervous, because there’s so much that goes into it.”

Their dream to host the event began with a partnership to sponsor the 2018 PBA Holman-Roth Doubles Tournament. Combine that with partnerships with the Professional Women’s Bowler Association and some of the game’s greatest bowlers donning the couple’s signature “Bowler X” patch on their shirts, and the Sandts are living by their motto: “for the love of bowling.”

The format is still to be determined but Sandt says the event will kick off June 6 with a pro-am setup, in which one of the pros will anchor a team since there are only eight bowlers. The vision is two squads where one is geared toward Juniors and another with adults.

June 7 will include some type of meet-and-greet, with the details to be announced in the very near future, followed by the pros’ practice session.

The tournament begins in earnest Saturday, June 8, as the television lights come on and the grandstands fill. CBS Sports Network is slated to broadcast four hours of head-to-head, round-robin action. Sunday, the lights will shine on the pros for another five hours of live action when a champion will be crowned.

“This is all coming together pretty quickly,” Sandt said. “We’re waiting for CBS to come in and inspect our setup, wiring and possible placement of grandstands. Once we have that, we can determine the number of tickets we’ll have available. I’m sure we’ll have some single-day and packages available.”

This is a chance for not only the Sandts but the entire local bowling community to support the game. If you watch the PBA broadcasts from Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, the Sandts are always in the crowd, contributing to the unique atmosphere.

“We take some people up every year,” said Sandt. “The format and crowd interaction just get you excited. I keep saying I want a team in Bethlehem. I’m hoping we can have that same atmosphere at this event. We’re so looking forward to it. We know we have the best staff and we’ll be ready.”

The event’s defending champion is Kyle Troup, who captured his 10th career title by defeating Kris Prather in Arlington, Washington.

This won’t be the only time the pros stop on Stefko Boulevard. March 8-9 Steel City will host a PWBA eastern regional tournament. On Sept. 6-8, the eastern regional of the PBA will take its turn on the center’s 24 lanes.

Darby doubles up

Owen Darby kicked off 2024 with a bang. The lefty torpedoed Steel City with an opening-game 300 in the Gary Piripavel Memorial League. He tacked on 268 and 235 for an 803. In the same circuit, Kendrix Burriss continued his recent success thanks to another 300.

Nicole Walker scored the lone 700 of the week for the women with her 277-720 at Steel City.

The girls proved too much in the Lehigh Valley Junior Traveling League. The circuit made a stop at Jordan, where Addison Quattrini used home-field advantage to tally her personal-best 290 solo effort en route to a 699 set. Madison Lesher was right behind with 672, followed by Leyna Kratzer’s 630.
