IN THE ‘PENTigers’ Maeda reacts to new role, dominant first relief appearance
Game notes: The Tigers will send second-year starter Reese Olson to the mound in search of his fifth victory this season. Just six Tigers starters over the past 100 seasons have posted lower first-half ERAs while winning four games or fewer (minimum 80 innings): George Uhle in 1931 (3.18 while going 4-9), Dean Chance in 1971 (3.09, 3-6), George Zuverink in 19+54 (3.02, 4-4), Elam Vangilder in 1928 (2.90, 4-6), Dave Rozema in 1978 (2.54, 4-4) and Hal Newhouser in 1942 (2.40, 4-4).
Toronto’s Yusei Kikuchi didn’t have nearly as successful a first half, as a seven-spot in Sunday’s start against the Diamondbacks sent his ERA rocketing to 4.42. That followed a 13-strikeout game against the Giants on July 9, so the potential for a Tigers stinker is there. One Tiger who’ll be excited to face the 33-year-old? Mark Canha, who homered Friday night in his return from an early departure last Saturday. The 35-year-old Tiger has owned Kikuchi over 26 career plate appearances, with two doubles, two homers, five walks and five strikeouts.
After today’s game, the Tigers and Jays wrap up the series with a 1:37 p.m. Sunday start featuring rookie Keider Montero on the mound. The Tigers then head to Cleveland for the start of a four-game set Monday. The Jays, meanwhile, have Monday off before welcoming AL East rival Tampa Bay to Rogers Centre.
